Quote Of The Day |
“Skokie is more than a place on a map; it’s the everyday promise to make room for one another.” |

Downtown Skokie’s story runs along Lincoln Avenue, once a Native American trail and later a stagecoach route connecting the village to Chicago and the North Shore. When neighboring Evanston restricted alcohol sales, taverns and family-run shops helped make Skokie—then called Niles Centre—a gathering place. That entrepreneurial spirit lives on in locally owned storefronts and the Downtown Skokie Merchants Collaborative’s events, from Summer Thursday Nights to Restaurant Week. The village’s 2025 Heritage Day featured a guided walk past the buildings and landmarks that shaped the district, celebrating the neighbors and merchants who continue to give it life. |

Cost shouldn’t keep Skokie residents from joining Park District programs.
The district’s Fee Assistance program offers eligible residents facing financial difficulty a sliding-scale reduction of up to 50% on many activities, classes, and camps. Some programs have a lower cap or are excluded.
Applicants must live within the Park District taxing district and provide proof of residency and household financial documents.
Register and pay for the activity first to secure a spot, then submit the assistance request at least two weeks before it begins; retroactive requests are not accepted.
Applications are confidential, and families can also explore other local scholarship and childcare resources. |
